Quick thinking pilot prevented worse after rudder loss near nclear power plants

Tue May 05 12:57:18 CEST 2026 Timsen

On April 24, 2026, at around 10 a.m. the 'Navios Celestial', loaded with 43,000 tons of cargo, suffered a rudder loss just three kilometres from the Atucha nuclear power plants near Zárate on the Paraná de las Palmas River. The vessel had departed from Arroyo Seco and was bound for Morocco. The pilot's quick thinking prevented worse. The bulk carrier encountered a failure in the servo motor pump, which rendered the rudder inoperable.,while navigating downstream near kilometer 138. With the current pushing the ship towards Atucha, the pilot on watch had less than ten minutes to take control of the vessel. The Paraná de las Palmas is not an easy river to navigate by improvisation with its course marked by sharp bends and, for much of its length, by a channel whose usable width forces passage very close to the banks. The notorious Atucha Bend, where the river makes a sharp turn near the power plants, was precisely the stretch that had to be avoided without steering. The pilot summoned the Captain, who was resting after the dock loading and entry operations, sent personnel to the bow, and sounded the general alarm to alert the entire crew and keep them safe. Then, he opted to stop the drift before the bend. He coordinated with the Captain to use full reverse to reduce speed to a minimum, used the current to maneuver the ship, and, with the help of one of the anchors, executed a controlled turn, bringing the ship to a stop near the right bank, without damage to the hull, cargo, or the environment. The vessel remains anchored in a safe position, awaiting the summary investigation by the Argentine Naval Prefecture and the repairs that wouold allow it to resume its voyage.
