Repairs commenced in Rio Tinto months after allision
Dismantling work was underway at Rio Tinto's port facilities in La Baie to prepare for the repair of Duncan Wharf, which was heavily damaged by the 'Nordic Oshima' on Dec 22, 2026. The ship struck the wharf after it approached at excessive speed, emroute from Porto Trombetas to unload a cargo of bauxite to Rio Tinto's port facilities in La Baie. A crane on a barge arrived at the port on May 4, 2026 being towed by a tug. Over the past few weeks, work has been carried out to dismantle the damaged structure in order to secure the site and prepare for the subsequent stages. The damaged section of the wharf will be demolished, and reconstruction work will continue throughout the year. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) continuied its investigation, which has been categorised as a Type 3 investigation under the TSB's Event Classification Policy. These investigations analyse a small number of safety issues. Category 3 investigations are generally completed within 450 days. As for the 'Nordic Oshima', it has since been repaired. The bow of the ship had been ripped open. After remaining in the waters of Ha! Ha! Bay for a few days, it then proceeded to the port of Baie-Comeau for repairs, which commenced on Jan 13 and lasted until Feb 3, before proceeding to Elevsis, where it arrived on Feb 21.
