Fire near Piney Point Lighthouse

Wed Sep 30 12:54:33 CEST 2026 Timsen

On the morning of Sep 29, 2026, a fire broke out in the engine room the 'Oag Respoinder' near the Piney Point Lighthouse in St. Mary’s County in the area of Lighthouse Road, prompting a response from multiple fire and rescue units of the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department , including several fire boats. The incident involved a small fire related to a box of rags inside the confined engine room space. The ship’s crew became aware of the fire, activated the vessel’s fire suppression system and followed reporting procedures. The fire was extinguished within a few minutes, and no injuries were reported. At 08:44 a.m. inits from Co. 6 and surrounding departments were alerted. The Rescue Squad 3 located the engine room fire below deck and went to work with an attack line from Fire Boat 4. Chief 1 assumed command, and requested an additional engine and Truck, adding Truck 7 to the response. Truck 7 arrived on scene and assisted with overhaul and ventilation of the vessel working with Rescue Squad 3, Engine 61, Fire Boat 4 and the U.S Coast Guard. Truck 7 operated for approx. an hour and a half before returning to service. During the incident Engine 71 provided fill in coverage at Company 6. The firefighters encountered heavy smoke conditions inside the vessel, along with elevated carbon monoxide and lower explosive limit readings. Oxygen levels were reported at approximately 10%, and crews operated on air tanks while working inside the vessel. Fire crews gained access to the engine room to check for remaining fire and remained on scene to assist with ventilation and safety procedures after the suppression system had been activated. By approximately 9:48 a.m., firefighters were conducting ventilation. The vessel was later deemed safe and turned back over to the captain. The crews returned to service around 10:40 a.m. Reports with photos: https://thebaynet.com/fire-breaks-out-aboard-200-foot-vessel-near-piney-point-lighthouse/ https://smnewsnet.com/archives/565091/no-injuries-reported-after-fire-on-large-vessel-in-piney-point/
