Captain and 1st officer facing trial after grounding incident in 2025

Mon Jun 22 11:19:47 CEST 2026 Timsen

The captain and the first officerof the 'NCL Salten', a a Dutchman in his 60s and a Ukrainian in his early 30s, were facing trial following the grounding of the ship near Trondheim on May 22, 2025, at 5:06 a.m., being accused of negligent navigation. The first officer was alleged to have fallen asleep while on sole watch on the bridge. He was accused of failing to ensure that the ship was navigated in a way that would not endanger human life, the environment, or property. The captain was also accused of violating his duties regarding technical and operational safety on board. The charges against both men concerned violations of Section 14 of the Maritime Safety Act, which governs regulations for safe navigation, according to prosecutor Kjetil Bruland Sørensen. According to the indictment, the captain failed to establish sufficient procedures for the proper use of the bridge watch alarm. Furthermore, he allegedly neglected to ensure the alarm was activated before the departure. Additionally he was accused of taking the key to the alarm system with him after his shift ended, preventing the following crew from activating the bridge watch alarm. According to the prosecution, this contributed to the officer on watch falling asleep on the bridge, ultimately causing the ship to run aground. The prosecution considered the violations serious, as the ship was effectively without active control for an extended period. Neither the first officer nor the captain has admitted any criminal conduct. The 1st officer denied the criminal charges. The captain's lawyer stated in May 2026, that his client had been anticipating the conclusion of the investigation. The grounding of the container ship had triggered several landslides on the neighbouring property. The edge of the landslide moved ever closer to the house that was almost hit. The owner's family had to be evacuated for eight months before they could return. The costs for the stabilisation work have so far been shared by the Norwegian state and the city of Trondheim. The state provided four million Norwegian Crowns, and the municipality an additional ten million Crowns. However, the city of Trondheim believed other parties were responsible for the costs incurred and have sent compensation claims to the parties involved, awaiting a response. The claims were directed against the shipping company, the operator and the operating company of the "NCL Salten".

Jostein Jørgensen returned home eight months after container ship landed near his house

Sat Feb 07 17:30:01 CET 2026 Timsen

More than eight months after the 'NCL Salten', now sailing as 'Odyssey' ran aground on May 25, 2025, near his home in Byneset in the Trondheimsfjord, Jostein Jørgensen has had the evacuation lifted and moved back home. The ship had been stuck a few meters from the house of Jørgensen's neighbour. During the work to remove the ship, several landslides occurred in the area, and four homes were evacuated. The house closest to the ship was not evacuated because it was on safe ground. Disagreements about who should pay for the landslide protection contributed to the work being delayed. So far, the municipality has contributed ten million Norwegian crowns, while the state has contributed four million. The area around the house has been permanently changed by the rocks. A former beach now is a steep cliff.

Security work in Byneset underway

Fri Oct 24 12:16:45 CEST 2025 Timsen

The Jørgensen family, which has been evacuated for five months after the "NCL Salten" ran aground at Byneset outside Trondheim, due to a mudslide and the risk of more landslides in the area, may be home again at christmas. The security work is now underway and involves replacing unstable masses with stable masses, which will take around a month. The work will cost 13 million kroner, with the state and the municipality sharing the bill, but efforts were being made to ensure that those responsible cover the costs. The clay is dug out and loaded onto a barge. Then the space gets filled with stable masses, first a fine layer of gravel and then a coarse layer on top. 20,000 tons of rock are being used for the safety work. The rock will be transported on barges from Ottersbo in Ørlandet.
