German couple gives up sailing after allision

Sun Jun 21 00:34:26 CEST 2026 Timsen

The German sailing couple Kirsten and Detlef Kaack has decided to give up sailing after the 'Niddasche' was severely damaged in an allision with the 'Olymp Trader' in the port of Korsør. They were aboard their Elan 45 yacht when they noticed the cargo ship approaching on an unusual course. Realising the vessel was heading directly toward them, the couple rushed ashore moments before impact. The cargo ship struck the moored yacht, tearing through its rigging and snapping the mast. The collision caused extensive damage to the vessel's structure and equipment, with repair costs estimated at more than €100,000. Following the accident, Danish authorities arrested the ship’s 54-year-old Russian chief officer after he failed an alcohol test. He has been charged under Danish maritime regulations, while investigators continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Drunk Russian helmsman caused severe damage

Thu Jun 11 21:08:08 CEST 2026 Timsen

On June 8, 2026, at around 6.15 p.m., the 'Olymp Trader', enroute from Wismar, allided with the German yacht 'Niddasche' (MMSI: 211418120) and the quay during its berthing manoevre in the port of Korsør. The 54 year old Russian chief officer, who was at the helm, had tried to get to the quay without a pilot. The ship's starboard side stern knocked down the yacht's entire rig. The German couple aboard the yacht , Kirsten and Detlef Kaack from Lankau, being in their 70s, aboard the yacht, had to jump onto the quay and escaped unscathed. However, they had to cut short their 3-weeks-holiday in Denmark, which should have concluded their 12 year sailing career. They had come from Spodsbjerg upon Langeland island, and had planned to continue to Samsø. It was their second night in Korsør. The damage to the boat from Neustadt was estimated to be more than100000 Euro. Ahead of the allision, the cargo ship also hit the quay and damaged it. Three lampposts were knocked over and destroyed, and the emergency flare went off in the harbour. In addition, the cargo ship also sailed into the quay on the opposite side of the port. When the police went on board the 'Olymp Trader, the helmsman was drug tested and found to have been drunk. He was charged under Danish naritime law and released on the evening after a blood test. He may be facing up to two years prison sentence and was expected to be dismissed by the operator Baltic Shipping Company. The ship, which was due to continue to Randers on June 9, was detained, until the Danish Maritime Authority had ensured that the ship is in order. The cause of the accident was being investigated by the Maritime Accident Investigation Board. The 'Olymp Trader' was released on the evening of June 9 and left the port at 9 p.m. again and berthed in Randers on June 10. Lost timber drifting onto beaches

Wed Mar 21 22:00:39 CET 2018 Timsen

Timber lost by the "Frisian Lady" have drifted onto beaches across East Lothian. The ship lost its load in the North Sea, and its cargo found its way into the Firth of Forth on March 20, 2018. 200 bundles of timber lost on March 2 enroute from Antwerp to Immingham found their way onto county shores stretching from Morrison’s Haven to North Berwick. People were being urged not to try and salvage the timber which came off the "Frisian Lady" while she was 110 nautical miles esat of Souter Lighhouse, off the South Shields coast. The timber packets had largely broken up into individual planks and were being reported to have washed up on beaches in East Lothian, the Scottish Borders and Fife. The Police Scotland appealed to people not to attempt to salvage any of the timber themselves. HM Coastguard had been issuing navigational safety broadcasts to warn shipping of the lost cargo after the incident, however they said aerial surveillance now indicated that most timber was no longer at sea in large concentrations and has washed ashore.
