Onega loss caused environmental damage of 65 million rubles, case went to court

Wed Jul 08 20:17:48 CEST 2026 Timsen

The damage to the Barents Sea after the sinking of the"Onega" was estimated at almost 66 million rubles. Rosprirodnadzor appealed to the Arbitration Court of the Arkhangelsk Region with a demand to recover this amount from the Fishing Collective Farm named after M. I. Kalinin, which owned the vessel. The environmental damage amounted to 65,777,203 rubles. The lawsuit is related to the fact that the sunken trawler is still at the bottom of the sea and continued to be considered a source of negative impact on the environment. The "Onega" sank on December 28, 2020, in the Novaya Zemlya area. During the incident, 17 crew members died, and two more sailors managed to survive. After the sinking, the trawler was not raised and remained in the waters of the Barents Sea. Rosprirodnadzor stated that the vessel was decommissioned, and the cause of the accident was violations in the performance of official duties. After the organisation failed to comply with the demand for voluntary compensation for damages, the agency decided to seek compensation through court. The court proceedings must determine the procedure for recovering funds for the consequences of the vessel's sinking.

The search for the 17 missing crew members from the 'Onega' has been stopped as of Jan 4 by the rescue ships 'Mikula', 'Antais' and 'Kapelan' with the 'Mikula' still remaining in the region. Neither the victims nor the objects of search have been discovered. The ship sank on December 28 due to the icing in the Barents Sea near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. Only two out of 19 people onboard were rescued alive. All remaining 17 sailors were presumed dead. A criminal case was launched into violating safety rules and maritime transport operations.
