Crew member with burn injuries medevaced off A Coruña
The CCS of Saövamento Marítimo in Fisterra coordinated a complex medical evacuation of a crew member of the 'Opal', enroute from Vistino, in the early morning of April 14, 2026. The man suffered severe burns, while the tanker was sailing 190 nautical miles north of A Coruña. The alert was raised on April 13 at 1:00 p.m. Initially, the coordination was transferred to the United Kingdom Rescue Centre (UKMRCC), as the shoü was in waters outside the Spanish SAR zone, but the captain decided to continue the voyage to carry out the evacuation in Spain. Once coordination was re-established by Salvamento Marítimo, the Helimer 402 SAR helicopter was mobilised, along with support from the Sasemar 101 aircraft. The patient was hoisted aboard the helicopter and arrived in A Coruña on April 14 at around 03:15 a.m., where an ambulance was waiting to transfer him to the hospital.
Engine shutdown off Tracy
The "Meganisi", while departing Tracy, sustained a bridge control failure, causing the main engine to shut down, on Dec 8, 2018 at 10.50 p.m. enroute to Gibraltar. The crew used local controls to restart the engine, and the tanker proceeded to Lanoraie anchorage, Quebec, for repairs and sailed on Dec 9 at 8.50 a.m. with an ETA at Gibraltar as of Dec 18.
Pier damaged in allision
The "Meganisi" allided with a pier at the Jose Venezuela Terminal on Aug 25, 2018, during mooring operations upon arrival from Corpus Christi with a cargo of naphtha. The vessel was proceeding to the South Pier to berth as instructed, with a pilot on board and three tugs assisting. As the vessel was smoothly moving into position alongside the pier, it touched a fender which collapsed upon contact. The berthing was aborted, and the vessel was instructed by the Terminal to move to a different berth. The tanker was then moved to Jose's East dock for discharging. The allision shut the South dock, one of Jose Offshore Platform's three oil berths, East, West and South, used to ship crude oil from the Orinoco Belt, Venezuela's main producing region, and to discharge imported diluents. Jose also has two monobuoy systems, which continued operating normally.
