Grounding in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Bay

Thu May 07 10:52:51 CEST 2026 Timsen

Sea rescuers from the Warnemünde and Timmendorf/Poel stations of the DGzRS assisted the "Ostseebad Rerik", which had run aground on a shoal in the Salzhaff lagoon, part of the Mecklenburg Bay and bordered by the Wustrow peninsula, near Rerik on May 5, 2026, at 2.25 p.m. with 45 passengers and five crew members on board. The ship had got stuck 620 metres from the shore outside the narrow shipping channel, after suffering engine trouble. The captain of the "Ostseebad Rerik" contacted the MRCC Bremen, after the ship was unable to free itself. The volunteer station in Timmendorf/Poel was initially alerted and arrived on scene about half an hour later with the lifeboat 'Wilma Sikorski'. However, to pull the "Ostseebad Rerik" from the mudflats, the additional assistance of the larger lifeboat 'Arkona' from the DGzRS station in Warnemünde, was required. No one needed to take advantage of the sea rescuers' offer to temporarily transport passengers ashore using the lifeboat. After the 'Arkona' arrived, the Wilma Sikorski', passed a towline to the passenger ship to prevent the 'Arkona' itself from running aground in the shallow water. Due to the northeast wind of three to four Beaufort, the water level in the lagoon dropped by a few centimeters during the operation. Together, the two rescue boats managed to pull the "Ostseebad Rerik" back into deeper water at 7 p.m. The ship was then able to return to Rerik with own power. The Wismar Water Police accompanied the rescue operation together with the MRCC. According to initial findings, the 'Osteebad Rerik' was not damaged. The Wismar Water Police filed a report of the accident. In this context, the ship's certificates and the skipper's qualifications were checked. The skipper's fitness to navigate was not impaired. The investigation into the cause of the accident was ongoing. https://www.seenotretter.de/aktuelles/seenotfaelle/im-salzhaff-festgekommen?fbclid=Iwb21leARoLp1jbGNrBGgujmV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHqY2zlK0rP7RbWUC_bc-lfYYtfTgautl02ykqvHtsnv7EtwcCiDYBEYqDYTo_aem_tEksSUdksXhT7MGztsvk1A
