Fire on refugees reception ship
On March 18, 2026, at 9:22 p.m., a fire broke out aboard the 'Patria' at the Heldring St. in Maassluis in the Hellinggat, behind the recycling center, actually used for refugees with a total of 70 accommodation places for asylum seekers. Following the initial report to the control room, a large-scale response was launched. The fire department and police responded with multiple units, which rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control. There was significant smoke development on the ground floor of the ship, which twas immediately evacuated. Approximately 100 people were brought outside and gathered at a designated location. The fire appeared to have been caused by a battery. The fire department brought the situation under control relatively quickly, but due to smoke and fire damage, the ship has been declared uninhabitable for the time being. The Officer on Duty for Public Welfare arrived on site to coordinate the situation. Meanwhile, the Fire Investigation Unit (TBO) found out that a power cable had started smoldering aboard the ship. The residents were transferred to Loods M, opposite the Govert van Wijn Quay, where accommodation was being arranged. Passenger ship becomes reception center for refugees
The 'Patria' will serve as a reception center for refugees in the near future. The first guests boarded the vessel in the morning of April 5, 2022. This ship has been moored at the Buitenhaven Way in Schiedam since April 3 for those fleeing war in their country. They will stay for three to six months, possibly even longer. The Patria has room for about 70 people. The municipality is therefore already investigating the possibilities of a longer stay. In recent weeks, refugees have already been received in a hotel and a B&B in Schiedam until the 'Patria' came. The Rotterdam-Rijnmond region receives two thousand refugees. Rotterdam is responsible for half of this.
