Ferry suffered electrical failure

Fri May 29 13:16:00 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Perseverancia' was taken out of service after an electrical failure on May 24, 2026, which occurred during its return trip between Batabanó and Nueva Gerona. The incident was related to the overheating of the ferry's electrical system. The failure damaged essential components for the vessel's operation. The two electric motors for the servo pumps were burned out due to overheating and required rewinding. The problem rendered equipment related to the ship's steering system inoperable. The repair required specific technical expertise. Technicians started a complete overhaul of the onboard electrical circuits. Technical teams replaced the automatic circuit breaker for the emergency diesel generator. They also repaired two magnetic contactors for starting the steering system pumps. In addition, all the vessel's electrical circuits were inspected. This inspection allowed for the identification of further damage and helpsed prevent new malfunctions once the ferry has resumed service. Complete repairs to the vessel could take between seven and ten days. The situation affects one of the most vital connections for the Isla de la Juventud, where maritime transport is crucial for passengers and cargo.
