Near collision on the Waal
An emergency maneuver prevented the two inland vessels 'Princess' and 'Morava' (MMSI: 244170800) from colliding on the Waal on June 3, 2026. The 'Princess' was sailingupstream on the left river bank. Using a VHF radio agreement and a blue board, it had indicated that it intended to do starboard-to-starboard with the downstream sailing vessel. The skipper had answered on the VHF radio that starboard-to-starboard was okay for him. However, the course of the 'Morava' remained directed towards the 'Princess'. The traffic control post called, and the skipper of the 'Princess' also called repeatedly, but the 'Morava' remained unreachable. When no change could be detected after two minutes, the skipper of the 'Princess' pulled the ship's horn. That, too, had no effect. Finally he managed to get the stern to port just in time. The 'Morava' was meanwhile reversing, although still not responding on the radio, and then sailed on. According to the owner of the 'Morava', there was a relief crew member on board. The day before, the ship had also been involved in a near-collision with another vessel; the owner was unaware of this. The police boarded the ship for further investigation and a breathalyzer test, the results of which have not yet been released.
