Bulk carrier remains detained in Bay of Algeciras

Thu Oct 30 12:32:09 CET 2025 Timsen

The ‘Princess Maria’ remains detained in Algeciras Bay as of Oct 30, where it has been under administrative arrest for three days by order of the Maritime Authority. The vessel, with a Syrian crew, was arrested on Oct 27, after serious safety deficiencies were detected that prevened a safe navigation. While technical repairs were carried out, a delay could occurr due to waiting for spare parts, needed to bring the ship's essential systems up and running before it can resume its route. Some of the crew have submitted political asylum applications to the Spanish authorities. The ship was under the supervision of inspectors from the Maritime Authority and the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), who were closely monitoring both the progress of the repairs and the condition of the crew. At the moment, there was no scheduled departure date.

Detention in Algeciras, crew members ask for asylum

Tue Oct 28 11:28:45 CET 2025 Timsen

On Oct 27, 2025, the Maritime Authority of Algeciras has detained the 'Princess María' for four days after detecting technical deficiencies that prevented its safe navigation. The ship was detained until the violations of international maritime safety regulations have been resolved. It had departed from the port of Marsa Brega, Libya, bound for Douala. Its voyage was interrupted in the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar following a routine inspection that resulted in its administrative arrest. The crew, of Syrian origin, has requested asylum from the Spanish authorities on humanitarian grounds. The crew remained on board awaiting resolutions to their requests from the Spanish authorities. The ship is currently under the supervision of inspectors from the Maritime Authority and the APBA (Basque Country Port Authority), while repairs were carried out and procedures related to the Syrian sailors were handled. So far, the estimated duration of the detention and the exact scope of the technical interventions have not been specified. As of Oct 28, the ship was moored in pos. 36° 07' N 005° 25' W.
