Three tankers attacked by drones

Fri May 29 12:54:53 CEST 2026 Timsen

On May 27/28, 2026, three shadow fleet tankers that had transited into the Black Sea came under attack. The 'James II' (IMO: 9253909), which was underway, appeared to have suffered damage, while the drones targeting the tankers 'Altura' (IMO: 9292199), loaded with 140000 tons crude, and the 'Velora', which were anchored about 14 miles off the Turkish coast in the Black Sea in pos. 41° 39' N 028° 34' E, appeared to have failed to explode. The tankers were engaged in an STS transfer near Kilyos, north of Istanbul, and had to be evacuated. The 'Altura' had transited the Bosphorus on March 16 and was moored since March 27. The 'Velora' had transited the Strait on April 7. Both ships had been stationary near Yenikoy since. Coastal Safety lifeboats were sent to ‌the scene for assistance. All crew members aboard the tankers were reported in good condition. Both the 'Velora' and 'Altura' were reported as being registered in Sierra Leone, although the 'Altura'’s flag has been listed as false already since November 2025. The tankers were managed by companies in Turkey and sanctioned by the UK and EU. The 'Altura' had already been damaged in an attack on March 26. The 'Velora' was subject to a set of sanctions by Ukraine, EU, UK, Switzerland, Canada)for its involvement in the Russian shadow fleet. Thu Mar 26 19:09:49 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Altura', with 27 Turkish crew members on board, coming from the Russian port Novorossiysk, was attacked and disabled 14 nautical miles from the entrance to the Bosphorus in the Black Sea. near Istanbul on March 26, 2026, at 12.30 a.m. The attack on the tanker, fully loaded with a cargo of 140,000 tons of oil, was carried out using drones and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).Damage was recorded in the ship's bridge, where an explosion occurred, and the engine room struck. A distress call from the captain described a critical situation onboard, with key systems down and flooding in the engine room. No injuries, however, were reported. The tanker began drifting at 3:50 p.m. UTC on March 25, with a tug response initiated at 11:17 p.m.. on March 26 at 12:30 a.m., the vessel’s AIS status had been updated to “Not Under Command.” The ship was drifting at a speed of 0.2 knots and showing a draught of 15.9 meters The tugs 'Kurtarma 11' (IMO: 9854399) and 'Kurtarma 12' (IMO: 9854404), along with the lifeboat 'Kıyı Emniyeti 5' of the Turkish Coastguard were dispatched to the scene to assist. The 'Altura', presumed to be a tanker of the Russian shadow fleet, has been listed under sanctions by the European Union since Oct 24, 2025, with additional sanctions imposed by Switzerland and Ukraine in Dec 2025, and the United Kingdom in Feb 2026. The suezmax was flying the Sierra Leone flag, was managed by Turkey’s Pergamon Denizcilik Isletmeleri and owned via the Sea Grace Shipping, registered in St Kitts & Nevis. The tanker has changed hands several times in recent years, previously trading as the 'Besiktas Dardanelles', before being sold in 2024 and later acquired by Istanbul-based interests and renamed 'Altura'. As it continued to transport Russian fuel, it was breaking the embargo imposed on the country. Video: https://www.instagram.com/p/DWV4F9WjJ6G/
