Again fire in scrap cargo of Baltic Shipping vessel in Køge
On May 5, 2026,, shortly before 3 p.m., a fire started in scrap metal inside the cargo hold of the 'Rix Union', which was berthed at the Nordhavnsvej in the port of Køge, accompanied by intense smoke development. However, the heavy smoke did not reach the city, but drifted over the water due to the wind. The ship was loaded with various types of scrap metal, and a large number of fire trucks were sent to the scene. The crew of the ship, supported by the Køge Fire Department and the port's employees, battled the fire. Using a crane, the port staff managed to empty part of the cargo onto the quay, so that the fire could be reached more easily. At around 5 p.m., the fire was almost extinguished, and work on the scene then consisted of post-extinguishing. Already on April 31, 2024, the cargo of scrap aboard another Baltic Shipping vessel, the 'Rix Munte'. had caught fire in the same port. It had arrived in Køge from Helsingborg. There were both plastic and oil residues and lithium batteries among the cargo. The ship was timewise in danger of capsizing at the quay.
