Damaged container ship towed to Tuzla

Thu Nov 05 16:50:31 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'RMS Team', which had caught fire after being attacked by an UAV in the Black Sea on Aug 21, was towed through the Bosphorus on Oct 31. After the attack, the wreck, towed with rescue and support vessels, was first taken to Samsun Port. It was then brought to the entrance of the Istanbul Strait by the tug 'Kazım Bey' (IMO: 1038937) of the PGE Tug Salvage Denizcilik, assisted by two tugs of the General Directorate of Coastal Safety. Ship traffic in the strait was suspended during the passage. The convoy arrived at Tuzla on Nov 1, where the 'RMS Team' was now to be converted into a cattle carrier. One crew member missing after drone attack

Mon Nov 02 12:40:36 CET 2026 Timsen

After a drone attack on the on the 'RMS Team' in the Black Sea on Aug 21, 2026, one crew member was missing. The container ship was struck by a drone enroute from Gemlik, while sailing towards the Russian port of Novorossiysk. The attack caused severe damage to the vessel, which was struck at the port side, suffering severe hull damage. A fire broke out on board, rapidly engulfing the engine room and living quarters, which completely burnt out, before spreading to the cargo containers, forcing the crew to evacuate the ship under extremely perilous conditions. The nearby container 'Lider Perihan' (IMO: 9499539) responded to the distress call and managed to rescue 11 of the 12 crew members. The castaways were taken to Turkish territorial waters. The search operations for the missing seafarer were ongoing. The party responsible for launching the drone has not yet been officially confirmed. The Akkon Lines company has declared a total constructive loss of the cargo and the vessel itself. The wreck was towed into the port of Samsun on Aug 28. Significant damage was visible, particularly to the containers located at the bow and the deck area. It was observed that numerous containers had been damaged, with some rendered completely destroyed. Akkon ceases Russia trade after loss of RMS Team

Wed Sep 02 07:49:51 CEST 2026 Timsen

The owner of the ' RMS Team' was one of two of Turkey’s leading shipping companies, besides Arka, which have suspended their services to all Russian ports, citing the increased dangers. The move came after the 'RMS Team' has been declared a total constructive loss, and after Turkish shipping suffered heavy casualties in the Black Sea as it attempted to maintain trade with Ukraine and Russia. Akkon Lines, which is Turkey’s largest regional operator, had begun redirecting cargo from Novorossiysk to St. Petersburg earlier in August adding charges of up to $2,500 per container while others were adding risk surcharges of $1,000 per container. The line was also working with Russia’s Fesco, which had lost its container ship 'Yanina' on Aug 1 in an attack in the Black Sea. The 'RMS Team' was docked in Novorossiysk on Aug 21, when it was struck by a drone. The ship was heavily damaged, and the crew evacuated into the port. Akkon then announced to customers that it has decided to suspend all service to all Russian ports, including St. Petersburg. The further escalation posed increased risks to the crews, vessels and cargo. It advised that any cargo currently in the system would be returned to its port of origin or shipping destination. However, one ship heading to St. Petersburg, which was in the Baltic, may be diverting to Lithuania to offload boxes shipped to St. Petersburg instead of taking them back to Turkey. Akkon’s decision followed a similar move by the Turkish carrier Arkas, according to a freight forwarding company. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company also recently announced that it was suspending its service to Novorossysk after one of its vessels was struck. Carriers sailing to Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, including Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, also announced a suspension of their services last mont has the Russian attacks intensified on the ports. Turkish diplomats continue to push for a moratorium on attacking commercial shipping in the Black Sea. They presented several proposals to Russia and Ukraine and continued to try to find a solution to stop the violence and protect seafarers. Turkey played a key role in 2022’s opening of the first grain corridor, and it hopes to duplicate its efforts to mediate a new agreement. Until then, the loss of the Turkish route was making it increasingly difficult to deliver cargo into both countries.
