Ferry on last voyage to Aliağa breakers

Mon Jun 29 14:44:16 CEST 2026 Timsen

As of June 29, 2026, the 'Santa Cruz' was on her way from Genova after a lenghty lay-up, enroute to the Aliağa Ship Breaking Yards under tow, to be recycled.

Arrested ferry to be sold

Mon Feb 23 18:03:14 CET 2026 Timsen

The Court of Genoa has ordered the auction of the 'Santa Cruz', that was last operated by Ferry Med. The ship has been arrested by its crew and other creditors. It has been laid up in Genoa since the end of 2024 with a new livery and put up for sale in October 2025, just one year after being purchased by the Algerian company L’Aurès. The Judge Cristina Tabacchi has appointed Fertonani Shipbrokers to sell the ferrywithin the next two months. The minimum reserve price will be determined after a valuation. Brokers, however, believed that 46-year-old ferry will struggle to find a trading buyer.

Ferry could be declared abandoned

Mon Jul 14 12:47:59 CEST 2025 Timsen

The crew members of the 'Santa Cruz' have been without pay for four months, without regular food and water supplies. On the night of July 12, the Coastguard in Genova intervened again because of the garbage that has not been removed for 25 days because the ship's owner refuses to pay the costs. They also received medical assistance two days ago from the Stella Maris organization. The psychological state was not stable, Despite expectations that they would finally receive their wages, the sailors from the "Santa Cruz" have still not been paid. The situation on the ship has further deteriorated, and the crew could not declare an abandonment ship unless there is progress by july 14. It was possible that the captain would then declare an abandoned ship and ask the Port Authority to disembark based on the only possible provision in the law, which is that the ship is unsafe. Despite this, the Port Authority cannot forcibly disembark the crew until they have been paid. Declaring an abandoned ship is an immediate trigger for the P&I club to react to pay them as soon as possible, and at the same time they take over the living expenses, i.e. staying on the ship until the earnings have been paid. The owner reported half the salary amounts to the P&I club because he did not include another contract that, according to the crew, was not reported to the Italian authorities. The ITF coordinator for Genoa, Francesco Difore, confirmed that the funds for the payment existed and that the deadline for a solution was on July 14, when a representative of the charter company should arrive. There were still nine crew members on board, five from Montenegro, and one each from Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Georgia.
