Collision on Kiel Canal
On Feb 28, 2026, at 3.25 a.m. a multi purpose vessel was in collision with the 'Sea Explorer', enroute from Oskarshamn to Misrata, on the Kiel Canal near Brunsbüttel, close to the Dückerswisch passing place. While entering the passing place, the vessel, for reasons yet to be determined, went out of control and came to rest across the canal. The 'Sea Explorer' was sailling westward toward the Brunsbüttel lock. The captain initiated a full reverse maneuver but was unable to prevent the collision. The bow of the westbound vessel collided with the port stern of the eastbound vessel. The crews reported no injuries. Emergency responders also found no water ingress or leaking fuel. The water police was investigating the cause, and the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Transport Sector (BG Verkehr) has ordered both vessels to cease navigation. They were, however, released the same day and resumed their respective voyages.
