Fuel from grounded trawler drained

Fri May 15 12:30:59 CEST 2026 Timsen

The National Fishing Corporation of Namibia on May 13 confimred that all fuel aboard the 'Seaflower' has been safely transferred to another vessel without any spillage. The incident raised environmental concerns due to the vessel’s proximity to one of Namibia’s most sensitive seabird breeding areas. The vessel remained aground at Penguin Island, where a team of experts continued with salvage efforts. A preliminary assessment indicated that the anchor chain had broken due to wear and tear, compounded by severe weather, causing the vessel to drift from its mooring position. The chain broke off in an area where visible inspection was unable to detect the wear. A further assessment by divers found no visible damage to the hull. Plans were therefore underway to move the vessel to a designated area for observation- Initial attempts by Namport tugboats (the Flamingo and the Omanda) to pull the vessel free were aborted due to bad weather. No foul play was suspected and no human error was involved, as the vessel was unmanned at the time of the incident. Trawler aground near Lüderitz

Thu Apr 30 21:34:54 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Sea Flower' ran aground in the Penguin Bay near Lüderitz on April 27, 2026, after it broke lose from its moorings. The tugs ' Flamingo' and ' Omanga' were deployed by Namport and tried in vain to refloat the ship on April 28 during the high tide. The attempt had to be aborted due to bad weather in the area. The trawler had a considerable amount of fuel in its tanks. Videos: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/9Eme8PqoLgA https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bHzL1vG7be8
