Tanker disabled off Castillo de Romeral
The 'Shamal' suffered a main engine failure during its maiden voyage on Aug 11, 2026, at around 6 p.m. UTC, which was detected by the Maritime Control about 14 nautical miles south of Castillo de Romeral. The vessel had departed from Singapore with a cargo of 17,000 tons of tire pyrolysis oil, and was en route to the port of Las Palmas for maintenance. Given the risk of it drifting due to the wind and its slow speed of 0.2 knots , the salvage vessel “Heroínas de Sálvora” (IMO: 9960112) was dispatched. It took the ship in tow on Aug 12 at around 1 a.m., and pulled it in an operation that lasted all night, until the vessel entered Las Palmas de Granaria, where the tugs 'VB Adriatico' (IMO: 9201011) and 'VB Mediterraneo' (IMO: 9158006) from the Boluda Towage base took over and secured it the Reina Sofía pier at midday. The response was coordinated by the CCS Las Palmas of Salvamento Marítimo.
