Thermal reaction caused smoke development
OIn Jan 31, 2026, the cargo of iron shavings aboard the 'Silver', enroute to Mannheim, spontaneously began smoking at the Lauffen lock on the Neckar River. As the plume of smoke grew increasingly dense, several emergency calls were received from concerned citizens. The emergency services eventually determined it was not fire but steam. The ship belonged to the recycling company Kaatsch in Schöpfingen. The reason behind the steam developlment was that iron shavings often contain residual cooling oil from sawing and milling work. Due to temperature fluctuations and condensation, this material can cause an exothermic reaction, causing the mass to heat up, depending on the metal, temperatures can reach tens of degrees (up to around 65–100°C). Extinguishing the fire with water was not an option because it could exacerbate the reaction; ventilating by opening the cargo was seen as sufficient to allow the heat to escape. Therefore, a mobile excavator was deployed , which removed the ship's cargo in several layers. When the smoke development stopped, the cargo was still over 50°C. The ship arrived in Mannheim on Feb 1.
