Container ship troubled on the Elbe
When the 'Singapore Express' left Hamburg for Antwerp on Sep 11 and had just had left the Eurogate Terminal at high tide to make place for the incoming 'Maastricht Maersk', while letting the vessel pass along to the terminal, being held by two tugs at the dolphins in Finjenwerder, it did not catch up speed as expected. Instead it drifted with the fresh southwesterly breeze closer and closer to the banks on the northern side of the Elbe. As the front tug, the 'VB Spirit', had already been released, it was in immediate danger of running ground, before the forward propulsion set in again. The stern tug 'VB Resolut' was ordered full power to port, in the direction of the deep fairway. The tug pulled with full force, so slowly the distance to the river bank increased again. The strong backwash of the container ship caused underwater-stones being stirred up. The fact that the ship was only partially laden, and that the tide was high a grounding was prevented, and the 'Singapore Express' continued on its way downriver.
