Fire damage repaired in Hong Kong

Thu Oct 08 13:46:32 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Skipanes', operated by Smyril Line, arrived at a shipyard in Hong Kong on Sep 19 in order to undergo extensive repairs following the engine room fire on Sep 2, enroute from from China to the Faroe Islands. At the time of the incident, the vessel was carrying a substantial payload, including approximately 900 electric vehicles. The fire was localised to the engine room and could be extinguished rapidly by the crew, thanks to the effiency of the ship's onboard fire suppression systems and the crew's emergency response training. There were no injuries reported among the 23 crew members. Following the successful containment of the blaze, the 'Skipanes' diverted to Xiamen for initial inspections and damage assessments. The vessel left the port on Sep 16 and headed to Hong Kong, where shipyard facilities can handle the complex structural and mechanical repairs required. The repair work was anticipated to take between six and eight weeks, depending on the availability of specific replacement parts and the complexity of the engine room reconstruction.

Engibe room fire days after delivery to Smyril Line

Thu Sep 03 18:01:01 CEST 2026 Timsen

A fire in the engine room on Sep 2, 2026, forced Smyril Line's new cargo vessel Skipanes, delivered only days ago, into a Chinese shipyard for inspection. All 23 crew members were safe. The incident occurred about 20 nautical miles off Taiwan, interrupted a fleet renewal that should add 3,300 lane metres of capacity to the Faroe Islands' North Atlantic lifeline and diverted the newbuild back to a Chinese yard for inspections and a technical assessment. Until those examinations have been complete, the company could not say when the vessel will begin commercial service, a delay that lands hard on a fleet plan timed to relieve pressure on North Atlantic cargo schedules. The Smyril Line took delivery of the 'Skipanes' from the CIMC Raffles shipyard in Yantai only days before the fire. On Aug 28 it had left Yantai enroute to Port Louis. The vessel was the first of two purpose-built RoRo newbuilds ordered by the company, with the sister ship 'Akranes- to follow, and both were designed dual-fuel and methanol-ready.
