Russian tanker disabled off Rügen island
Between the German island of Rügen and the Danish island of Møn the 'Sled' suffered propulsion problems en route from the Russian port of Primorsk to Skagen, carrying a cargo of Russian crude oil, early on Oct 18, 2026. During the night, the ship was sailing from Bornholm towards the Kadet Trench, when it began to slow down shortly after entering the shipping route at around 1:30 a.m. and eventually came to a complete stop in. Strong easterly winds have pushed the vessel away from the German coast and toward Denmark. The Warnemünde Vessel Traffic Service has dispatched the emergency tug 'VB Bremen Fighter' (IMO: 9321287) to the tanker. However, the Danish Joint Operations Centre in Karup assisted the jurisdiction and were monitoring the situation. The maritime radio station Lyngby Radio was maintaining contact with the vessel. The patrol boat 'P 523' (MMSI: 220434000) was nearby. The 'Sled' anchored half a mile outside of Danish territorial waters in pos. 54° 48' N 012° 43' E. Also in the vicinity on the morning was the Russian landing ship 'Aleksandr Shabalin', which escorts Russian merchant vessels. Another Russian naval ship was positioned near the island of Fehmarn. On Oct 18 at 10.30 p.m. the shadow tanker had apparently fixed its engine problems and resumed its voyage in the direction of Skagen with an ETA as of Oct 19. The German Federal Police were also active during the night in connection with the Russian naval units and the tanker. The patrol vessel 'Bamberg' (IMO: 9830020) had tracked the shadow tanker 'Myra' (IMO: 9336490), which had arrived from Russia. The 'Myra' had previously drawn attention in the Baltic Sea when it changed its registered flag—switching from Madagascar to Cameroon—while underway. The Federal Police therefore kept the tanker under surveillance. No inspection took place, as the vessel was outside German territorial waters. The 'Myra' passed through the Fehmarn Belt during the night leading. The 'Myra' appeared on the sanctions lists of the EU, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ukraine and Canada.
