Largest crane ship of the world suffered blackout and was threatened to run aground

Mon May 04 09:22:48 CEST 2026 Timsen

On May 3, 2026, at 8.30 a..m the 'Sleipnir' suffered a complete blackout near Hundvåg in Stavanger, losing all power and steering. The crane ship started drifting towards the shore with no propulsion and no steering. Tugs attended quickly and managed to get towing lines on the vessel by around 09:15 a.m. The ship was stopped metres from the shore and towed out into the Åmøyfjord, where it was held in pos. 59° 01' N 005° 42' E by the tugs 'BB Power' (IMO: 9995959), 'BB Worker' (IMO: 9360051) and 'Bjonn' (IMO: 8223048). No evacuation was needed, and no structures were struck. An oil spill was, however, reported in the aftermath, with cleanup crews deployed to remove the oil from the water and a nearby beach at Skeisvika. The authorities have opened a formal investigation. Ferry operator Fjord1 had to suspend sailings from Stavanger to Hommersåk in Sandnes until 10:10 a.m. Reports with photos and video: https://www.nrk.no/rogaland/kranfartoy-fikk-problemer_-_-var-fa-meter-fra-land-1.17869364 https://www.rastavanger.no/storre-kranfartoy-med-motortrobbel-drifter-mot-hundvag/s/5-165-249929?fbclid=IwdGRleARkZkpleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEe4HDP7B9-bpVMZgddXZLg33BvA_0wIkuMUmrXZJ__3OUgazOG1gRng0kvCJ0_aem_YXd--blKtKq4NNNjMXdWVA https://www.rastavanger.no/vis/reels/video?selected=5-165-250217

Greenpeace activists approached the gas platform under construction

Wed Jul 31 10:25:33 CEST 2024 Timsen

Om July 30, 2024, Greenpeace activists approached the gas platform under construction with the 'Sleipnir' by a Dutch energy company around 20 kilometers northwest of the island of Borkum. Around 30 people gathered for a demonstration with inflatable boats, life rafts and kayaks, which has so far not resulted in any further disruptions to operations or impairments to shipping. The Dutch authorities were responsible for the measures on the drilling platform, and they received support from the water police Lower Saxony upon request. Three life rafts that make up a protest camp were manned by two people each throughout the night. The rubber dinghies and kayaks were removed overnight for safety reasons. The Greenpeace activists had set off from Borkum port. According to the company One-Dyas, the m/v "Sea Seraya", which was loaded with building materials, was currently lying idle. The emergency forces from the Lower Saxony water police were on site with boats, but did not intervene. Ships from the Dutch coast guard also accompanied the protest at times. The protest was taking place in Dutch territorial waters. The water police are in close contact with their Dutch counterparts. The water police had been aware of the action since last week. The demonstration was not registered, but was covered by freedom of assembly as long as there was no danger to the participants and they behaved peacefully. For One-Dyas, Greenpeace's protests are acceptable as long as they remained peaceful. The Dutch oil and gas company announced this on July 30. However, One-Dyas complained that Greenpeace's protest action disrupted work on the construction site and that unexpected interruptions could lead to an increased risk of accidents for people, nature and the environment.
