Crew evacuated from ship after water ingress
The crew of the 'SLNC York', enroute from Honolulu, has been safely evacuated after the vessel began taking on water in the Pacific Ocean on Aug 18, 2026. The source of the water ingress was a catastrophic shaft seal failure. The crew and technical teams took immediate action to control the flooding. The vessel remained stable and was expected to receive assistance from a support vessel for the voyage to port. As a precaution, the entire crew was transferred to the LPG carrier 'Pacific Yantai' (IMO: 9739965), enroute from Balboa, which was nearby and responded to assist. All crew members remained safe, uninjured, and fully accounted for and taken to Yosu aboard the Good Samaritan. The SLNC York' was enroute from Honolulu, to Naha, operating as part of the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Maritime Security Program, a fleet of commercially operated, militarily useful U.S.-flag vessels available to support Department of Defense sealift requirements during war or national emergencies. On Aug 21, the salvage tug 'Koyo Maru' (IMO: 9162148) has rendezvoused with the abandoned 'SLNC York' in the Western Pacific. The weather looked good for the 'Koyo Maru' to pick up the tow bridle left by the crew of 'SLNC York' before they abandoned ship.
