Historic vessel stuck in Gulf

Wed Sep 02 19:31:06 CEST 2026 Timsen

Terra Nova Expeditions has been forced to replace a charter of the 'St. Helena', as the vessel has been unable to reposition from the Middle East Gulf in a safe and timely manner for the start of the inaugural Antarctic season. The company had intended to charter the vessel and convert it into a polar expedition cruise ship. On Aug 28, the company announced that, as the 'St. Helena' remained trapped inside the Gulf, it will now charter the expedition cruise ship 'Vestland Adventurer' from Norway’s Vestland Classic Cruises. The charter, which begins in November, was due to run for three years on a seasonal basis.

Former RMS to be turned to expedition cruise ship

Thu Aug 07 11:52:11 CEST 2025 Timsen

The Terra Nova Expeditions plans to turn the former RMS 'St. Helena' into an expedition cruise ship, in order to offer “authentic small-ship adventures” in Antarctica. The company plans to start operations in late 2026. In addition to the former ship that linked the St. Helena archipelago with South Africa in the past, Terra Nova plans to operate a tall ship named the 'Icebird', which will be the first sailing expedition vessel, featuring an ice-enforced aluminum hull. The 'St Helena' has undergone an extensive refurbishment and renovation in 2022, which saw an investment of eight million pounds. The ship is currently anchored off Khor Fakkan. It had served the British overseas territory of Saint Helena for nearly three decades before being retired in 2018. The former Royal Mail Ship then briefly served as a floating armory in the Gulf of Oman before being sold to the St. Helena LLC and converted into a transportation hub for a circuit of SUV races. The Terra Nova’s inaugural sailing is currently scheduled for Dec 2026, with the 'St. Helena' embarking on an expedition cruise from Ushuaia.
