Engine repairs taking longer than expected
The 'Saint-Patrick' has been immobilised at the STEB Terminal in Dunkirk since Oct 11 due to the engine trouble, due to which the ferry was initially announced as being out of service for "at least two weeks". Now it will remain in Dunkirk until at least Nov 11 for permanent repairs.
Ferry suffered engine failure
The 'St. Patrick', serving on the route Boulogne-sur-Mer – Cork, suffered an engine failure on Oct 8, 2026, en route to Boulogne, and had to complete its crossing on two engines instead of four, which considerably slowed its speed. It finally reached the port on Oct 9 at 2.50 a.m., several hours behind schedule, and was sidelined. On Oct 11 at 8.30 a.m. it left the port enroute to Dunkirk for repairs and berthed at the Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque at 3.30 p.m. The ferry was expected to be out of service for at least two weeks. It has been operating the Boulogne-Cork route since June. Bookings have been transferred to the other Hibernia ferry, the 'Akka', which will operate two to three crossings per week during this time. This significantly reduced the number of connections between Boulogne and Cork in the coming weeks. The 'Akka' is also slower than the 'St. Patrick' and already experienced an engine failure in June. The crossing now takes approximately 24 hours, rather than 21.
Ferry handed over and renamed
The 'Superfast IX' has been handed over to the Hibernia Line and has been renamed 'St. Patrick'. The ferry was expected to commence the new Cork - Boulogne-sur-Mer route in mid June 2026.
