Report: Helmet saved life after equipment failure

Thu Jun 18 12:00:55 CEST 2026 Timsen

On June 18, 2026, the Transport Accident Investigation Commission has published a report on an incident in which a crew member of the 'Thor Nitnirund' suffered serious head injuries after a lifting system snapped on the bulk carrier, while it was drifting in the Cook Strait. on March 20 2025. The victim had to be medically evacuated by helicopter to the Wellington Hospital. The ship had been waiting for a berth at the Port of Wellington, when the crew tried to retrieve two log-securing lashing chains that had washed over the side during rough weather. Each chain weighed about 75 kilograms. The crew used a mooring winch and a one-tonne synthetic web sling to anchor the improvised rigging. As the second chain was being hauled on board, the web sling broke, causing a rope and shackle to snap back across the deck. The equipment struck the seaman on the back of his legs, causing him to fall, strike his head on the deck and collide with another sailor. His helmet saved the sailor’s life after the equipment failure. The seaman remained in Wellington Hospital for a month before being repatriated to Thailand for further treatment and recovery.
