Police uncovered violation of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission regulatio

Mon Oct 05 18:42:33 CEST 2026 Timsen

During an inspection of the 'Ura' at the port of Brake on Oct 2, 2026, officers from the water police uncovered a violation of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission regulations, as established in the MARPOL Convention (Annex VI, Regulation 13) for international shipping. This violation resulted in the imposition of a security deposit amounting to 40,000 euros. The deposit was levied against the captain and the chief engineer by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Investigations conducted by water police officers on board revealed that the vesselhad been fitted with new auxiliary diesel engines in 2024. These new engines were not correctly recorded in the required documentation and, furthermore, were operating without the mandatory additional exhaust gas cleaning systems. Due to the absence of these cleaning systems, the BG Verkehr (German Social Accident Insurance Institution for Transport and Traffic)—specifically its Ship Safety Division—was also notified of the situation. However, the vessel was not prohibited from continuing its voyage; instead, it was permitted to proceed subject to specific conditions. The details of these conditions were coordinated among the relevant authorities. Investigations by the water police were ongoing. The ship sailed the same day, headed to Szczecin with an ETA as of Oct 5. Report with photo: https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/119277/6363712
