Detention in Gulf of Finland

Fri Oct 02 09:58:17 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Västerbotten', enroute from Mönsterås to Sillamäe, was detained on Sep 30, 2026, while transiting Russian waters in the Gulf of Finland. The vessel was using the established Russia–Estonia–Finland maritime corridor, when it made a sharp turn, changed course, and headed deeper into Russian waters. The ship was stuck for about eight hours, starting around 6 a.m., approximately 13 kilometers south of Bolshoi Tyuters Island. It was released around 2 p.m. and proceeded to Estonian waters. The Russian authorities have given no reason for the detention. Estonian authorities have advised vessels using the corridor to avoid Russian waters, although the route remained preferable because it avoided the shallower waters closer to the Estonian coast. The ship was released again on Oct 1 and reached the port of destination the same day.
