Engineer rescued day after Russian attack
A Filipino crew member of the 'Venturo' was rescued by the Ukrainian Coastguard after spending nearly 24 hours adrift in the Black Sea, after the civilian dry cargo vessel was struck by a Russian drone on the evening of July 17 in the Black Sea. On the evening of July 18, servicemen from Ukraine's 26th Maritime Border Guard Detachment detected the lifeboat using surveillance equipment and launched a rescue operation despite darkness and the continuing threat of additional Russian drone attacks. Most of the crew had already been evacuated by Ukrainian Navy personnel after the attack, but the ship's electrical engineer was left drifting alone in a lifeboat. The sailor was successfully evacuated and brought safely ashore. After a medical examination, it was determined that the sailor was in satisfactory condition and did not require medical assistance.
