Yacht sank off Gran Canaria
Enroute from Tenerife to Gran Canaria, the 'Vlie', while sailing heavily reefed on a beam reach in about 30 knots of wind and long Atlantic swells, suddenly had noticeable contact with an unknown object in the water on Feb 13, 2026, about 12 nautical miles off Gran Canaria. The crew couldn't see or identify what it was. Immediately afterwards, there was a significant water ingress into the yacht. Water was discovered above the floorboards. The cushions in the bow were being pushed up by the incoming water. There was no chance of pumping or using the radio. The batteries were submerged. Within five minutes, the ' Bavaria 45 had sunk. The two EPIRBS were activated. The crew boarded the life raft in an orderly and professional manner. An SAR helicopter, which was deployed by Salvamento Marítimo in Gran Canaria, arrived on scene within approximately 45 minutes. The rescue operation was calm and efficient. No one was injured, when the castaways were hoisted aboard the helicopter from the life raft. Also a tanker had diverted and a lifeboat was mobilized, but did not have to intervene.
