Flag inspection on sanctioned tanker
On June 7, the European naval and air force mission IRINI conducted a flag inspection of the EU-sanctioned 'Sandhya' in the Mediterranean Sea as part of its high seas surveillance and control operations. The inspection was carried out pursuant to Article 110 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which governs the right of visitation on the high seas under certain conditions, including suspicion of a vessel's false nationality or flag registration. The tanker is on the European Union's sanctions list, being accused of transporting or exporting crude oil or petroleum products from Russia and employing irregular and high-risk maritime transport practices. Its inclusion on the list, which took effect on July 20, 2025, is part of the European measures against the Russian shadow fleet., a network of ships, being used to circumvent the G7 and European Union embargo and price cap. The inspection was part of the EU's efforts to combat the Russian shadow fleet. It was the third such operation carried out by IRINI in just a few days: On June 1, the mission conducted a flag check on the oil tanker 'Oneiroi' (IMO: 9390587), which is also subject to EU sanctions. On May 11, IRINI carried out a similar operation on the tanker 'Nelsa' (IMO: 9408205). In all cases, the operations were based on Article 110 of the Law of the Sea Convention and European efforts against the Russian shadow fleet. The European mission continued to operate under its EU mandate, which has been extended until March 31, 2027.
