Russian container ship sank after drone strikes

Fri Aug 28 23:29:14 CEST 2026 Timsen

On July 31, 2026, at 10 p.m. Moscow time, at least two Ukrainian drones struck the 'Yanina', operated by Rosatom's shipping subsidiary FESCO, which was linked to Putin's state nuclear corporation, while the sanctioned vessel was transiting the Black Sea, bound for Novorossiysk, with a cargo of construction materials a.o., approximately 130 nautical miles from the port of destination. The crew abandoned the ship in an organised and coordinated manner, after it began to sink. The container ship 'Delphinus' (IMO: 9137844 ) came to assist and was able to rescue 16 of the 17 castaways. The Black Sea Fleet's naval aviation unit dispatched a helicopter, which located the missing seafarer, who was also recovered in good condition. Kyiv has accused Russia of using the waterway to transport sanctioned goods, including oil. Russia has launched multiple strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure and ships approaching Ukrainian ports since the war began, attacks that Kyiv regarded as a war crime. The operator Fesco, one of Russia’s largest transport groups, has stopped accepting cargo applications for shipments through the Black Sea after the 'Yanina' was sunk, on Aug. 4. The group said it was working on additional safety measures and considering alternative delivery options. Logistics operators feared that those alternatives were limited and would most likely lead to new bottlenecks in Russia’s Far East ports.
