Crane failure killed crew member

On Oct 19, 2026, an accident occurred on the 'Yılmaz Balıkçılık', which was operating approximately 30 nautical miles off the coast of the Sürmene district in Trabzon. The ship had set sail from the Akçaabat district of Trabzon and was hauling in a net filled with bonito, when the pulley system snapped. The failure caused the netting gear to fall onto the fishermen, leaving four people injured. The injured men were transported to the port of Araklı by another fishing vessel belonging to the same company. Upon arrival, they were taken by waiting ambulances to hospitals, including Araklı State Hospital and other nearby medical facilities. One of the fishermen, 40-year-old I.E., who was in critical condition, could not be saved despite all medical interventions.
