Ferry capsized in Quezon

Fri Oct 30 09:48:03 CET 2026 Timsen

All 40 passengers and 18 crew members were rescued after the 'Virgen de Peñafrancia II', enroute from Polillo with 14 vehicles on board , tilted to starbord side and then capsized at the Real Port in Quezon on Oct 30, 2026, at 12.44 a.m. During the unloading operation, a mooring rope, which was securing the vessel to the pier, had snapped due to strong currents, causing the vessel’s bow to drift about ten meters away from the berth. The captain attempted to maneuver back, but the bow got stuck on the ground, causing an increasing list. Rescuers were able to evacuate all people aboard, including two babies. The SAR operation was completed at around 3:30 a.m. Local disaster personnel assessed the rescued, four of whom were sligthly injured, but who were in general found in a good physical condition. After the sinking, anti pollution booms were deployed to protect nearby coastal communities from the oil spilling from the wreck. Coastguard personnel also inspected the vessel's remaining fuel and oil inventory to assess possible marine pollution, as the crew shared the vessel had 1,300 liters of marine diesel oil in its service tank. The Coastguard directed the owner, the company Starhorse Shipping Lines Incorporation, to apply for an Emergency Salvage Permit and undertake measures to safely remove the semi-submerged vessel. The Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered the suspension of the Passenger Ship Safety Certificate (PSSC). The ferry was built in 1997 by the Packcheon Shipbuilding & Engineering in Mokpo and was operated as 'Sinkwang Ferry No. 3' until 2000, then as 'Cheong Hae Jin Car Ferry No. 2' until 2003 and as 'Soan Ferry No. 2' until 2018.
