Grounding and smoke in engine room

Mon Jun 22 16:23:43 CEST 2026 Timsen

On June 21, 2026, at approximately 11:55 p.m., the two crew members of the 'Zenit' contacted the MRCC in Bremen, after the fishing vessel, had run aground in the northern section of the Northrn Grounds, about 14 nautical miles northwest of Cuxhaven. Smoke was coming from the engine room. The MRCC immediately alerted the lifeboats Hermann Marwede', stationed off Heligoland, and 'Bernhard Gruben, stationed at Hooksiel. Additionally, the customs vessel 'Helgoland' and the fishing cutter 'Wangerland', which were in the area, also diverted to the distressed vessel. The 'Wangerland' reached the 'Zenit' on June 22 at around 12:45 a.m. and passed a towline. However, the water level was too low to free the vessel. At approximately 1:10 a.m., the 'Hermann Marwede' arrived at the scene and assumed the role of On-Scene Coordinator (OSC). The 'Bernhard Gruben' arrived shortly thereafter. After an initial assessment, the rescuers found no further smoke or water ingress. The crew of the 'Bernhard Gruben' launched their daughter boat, the 'Johann Fidi'. The rescuers established their own towline connection to the distressed vessel. Around 2:00 a.m., they successfully towed the 'Zenit' free. During the tow towards the Weser, the convoy encountered rough seas with waves up to two meters height, that caused the trawler to roll, and the fishing gear, which had not been fully retracted due to engine failure, began banging against itself. The 'Bernhard Gruben' thereupon steered a more northerly course until reaching calmer waters. The fishing gear also complicated docking at the harbour. At approximately 6:10 a.m., the MRCC mobilised the volunteer lifeboat crew from the Horumersiel station. Using their lifeboat 'Wolfgang Paul Lorenz' and the 'Johann Fidi', the rescuers safely maneuvered the disabled vessel into the small porr of Hooksiel, where it docked at around 7:45 a.m. At the time of the operation, moderate north-westerly winds of force 4 had prevailed in the area.
