Repairs of collision damage completed
HMS 'Bangor' has conducted post-refit trials in Rosyth on July 22, 2026, after repairs of 2,5 years. The vessel was severely damaged in an allision with HMS 'Chiddingfold' in Jan 2024 during the Operation Kipion, which tore a gaping hole at port side. The galley and bedrooms were also destroyed, while no one was injured. Shortly after the accident, specialist personnel were deployed to the UK Naval Support Facility in Bahrain to conduct an accident investigation and damage assessment. A mechanical fault had caused HMS 'Chiddingfold'’s steering to malfunction, thus causing the allision. While the Portsmouth-based minehunter was officially decommissioned in July 2026 at the cost of £10.896m, work was underway to bring HMS 'Bangor' back to sea. The collision had caused an estimated £25m worth of damage. It was originally planned for all the Sandown-class ships to be decommissioned in 2026, but the decision was made to extend her life due to the need to retain an assured deep water mine-hunting capability. Months of repairs took place before the ship was taken back to the UK in Dec 2025. Heavy collision in Bahrain
The HMS 'Chiddingfold' (MMSI: 234582000) was in allision with the HMS 'Bangor' (IMO: 4906783), while docked in Bahrain on Jan 18, 2024. Both vessels suffered damage. The HMS 'Chiddingfold' reversed into the HMS 'Bangor' after a mechanical failure. The incident caused a significant hole in the hull, which is constructed of glass-reinforced plastic. The HMS 'Bangor' was teetering on the edge of sinking after the incident, after the HMS 'Chiddingfold' nearly destroyed the galley and bedrooms. However, despite the severity of the crash, none of the 39 crew members aboard HMS 'Bangor' were injured. The incident occurred during the ongoing Operation Kipion, which aims to safeguard crucial oil and trade routes in the region. There was no timeline yet for when the vessel can return to frontline duties. A team is traveling to Bahrain to assess the full extent of the damage and investigate the circumstances.
