Fire reignited two hours after initial blaze was put out

Fri Aug 14 09:44:49 CEST 2026 Timsen

A fire broke out on in the cabin of the 'Falkenstein' on the Winschoterdiep in Waterhuizen on Aug 13, 2026, at 7.30 p.m. As the fire was spreading rapidly, multiple fire units were deployed to combat the flames. The dispatch center upgraded the incident to a medium-sized fire as a precaution. Two fire engines and a fireboat from the Haren fire department responded. A hydraulic platform from the city of Groningen was also called in. After the fire was initially knocked down at 8.35 p.m., it reignited in the evening. The fire department was called out again at 10.25 p.m., and upon arrival , the ship was heavily ablaze. Two fire engines from the fire brigades in Haren and Harkstede were mobilised. It soon became apparent that the fire was spreading rapidly, prompting a further escalation of the response. A fire-fighting vessel was also deployed to combat and cool the ship from the water. Flames were shooting out of the cabin and there was a significant smoke development. Thanks to the rapid response of the emergency services, the fire was brought under control again within half an hour. Because the ship was at a shipyard for maintenance, no one was on board at the time when the fire broke out. No one was injured in the incident. How the fire could flare up again a few hours after the ‘fire under control’ signal, was still unknown and was to be investigated further.
